On March 15, 2011, the CCWA released this official statement on the proposed expansion of the landfill in Carroll Township, New York:
MARCH 15, 2011
The Conewango Creek Watershed Association (CCWA) is a non-profit organization that engages the public, visitors, and municipalities to work together so that the Conewango Creek watershed can sustain its people, wildlife, and water quality for generations to come. As such, we are deeply concerned about this proposal to operate a 50-acre construction and demolition landfill in the headwaters of Storehouse Run southeast of the Hamlet of Frewsburg, NY. Although we respect private property rights, we view water as a public resource that flows through (and under) private land. Obviously, there is potential for the proposed landfill operations to adversely affect water and other natural resources. People and communities are also part of our watershed. We are concerned that quality of life will be compromised for many landowners and communities if this proposal is permitted.
To that end, CCWA will provide a letter of our concerns to the ongoing review being conducted by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, advocating for the long-term sustainability of natural resources and affected communities in NY and PA. We encourage other people throughout our watershed to do the same. Written comments are being accepted through Friday, March 25, 2011 at 4:45pm to Charles D. Cranston, Deputy Regional Permit Administrator, NYS DEC, 182 E. Union, Suite 3, Allegany, NY 14706-1328 or via email: cdcranst@gw.dec.state.ny.us Please note there will be future opportunities for public comment as well. A copy of The Public Scoping Document for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Carroll Landfill Expansion prepared on behalf of Sealand Waste, LLC will be made available on our website. CCWA’s comment letter will be available on our website once submitted at www.conewangocreek.org.
