Conewango Creek Cleanup 2011
The Conewango Creek Watershed Association is busy planning its Third Annual Conewango Creek Cleanup. The cleanup will take place Saturday, Sept 10, 2011. This is the first day of the regional Allegheny River Cleanup which will continue through the following Saturday, Sept 17th. One phase of the cleanup will consist of canoe crews which will clean the main stem of Conewango Creek from Frewsburg to theAllegheny River. There will also be people cleaning from shore in various areas. This year we added a new section. A crew cleaning from shore and in the creek will work on a section of the Chadakoin River in downtown Jamestown. The 2009 and 2010 Cleanups were a fantastic success. Last year there were 115 volunteers who removed 2000 lbs. of trash and 1600 lbs. of recyclables.
Jamestown Audubon Society has joined us as a new partner this year. Audubon received a grant from the TogetherGreen Program of the National Audubon Society which will cover some expenses for this event and another volunteer event next April. The goal of the TogetherGreen Program is to increase volunteer participation in the community.
Volunteers will meet at Larimer Park in Russell as they did last year. Registration will start at 8 am and go through approximately 9 am. At approximately 9 am the canoe crews will go to their respective starting points and be on the creek by 10 am. Canoes will be provided on a limited basis and volunteers can also use their own. Shore crews will be assigned sections of shore to clean and also reach their starting points by 10 am. Crews will clean until they complete their section or as much as they can before quitting at 1 pm.
The Chadakoin crew will meet at the Chadakoin River Walk behind the Oriental Star Buffet (across South Main Street from Friendly’s Restaurant). Registration for this crew will begin at 10 am. The Crew will clean until 1 pm. They will clean the Chadakoin River from South Main Street to Buffalo Street. Most of these volunteers will be wading in the creek to pick up trash so wear old but sturdy, protective shoes and long pants.
All volunteers are welcome to join the free picnic lunch which will go from 1:30 to 2:30 pm at Larimer Park in downtownRussell,PA. We will be serving hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob, salads and other similar foods. Some door prizes will be given away as an additional thank-you to our volunteers.
All volunteers must wear protective shoes and long pants. Be prepared to get wet and muddy. Remember to bring your own bug spray and sun screen. Coffee, doughnuts water and snacks will be provided. Local businesses from Jamestown and Warren are also supporting the cleanup.
