Conewango Creek Watershed Association
The Conewango Creek Watershed Association is an unique partnership between two states, three counties, numerous municipalities, and several county, state and federal agencies. The collaboration of the entities, and the citizens within the watershed, has resulted in an organization focused on conserving the heritage and natural resources so important to our communities.
What is a Watershed?
Simply stated, it is an area of land which water flows across or under on its way to a stream, river, or lake. Think of a watershed as a funnel. We all live in a watershed. You and everyone in your community are a part of that watershed community. Watersheds are natural systems that link the land and water resources and the living organisms, including people, within its boundaries. How we live on the land affects the quality and quantity of the resources within the watershed.
The Conewango Creek watershed is a 900 square mile drainage basin that is comprised of many smaller watersheds. Likewise, the Conewango is a portion of the larger Allegheny and Ohio River watersheds. The Conewango watershed contains approximately 780 miles of streams, 423 square miles of forest, and 392 square miles of farmland.
The development of this website has been partially funded by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Citizen Education Fund under a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
