Don’t forget to volunteer to help clean up the Allegheny Reservoir!
There are still some openings for anyone who wants to help clean up the Allegheny Reservoir shoreline on Saturday May 9, 2015. This annual event is sponsored by the Allegheny National Forest and several local partners. “We’ve had a great response for our call for volunteers, but we welcome anyone else who wants to help out,” said Nathan Welker, Allegheny National Forest fisheries biologist and an event organizer.
Welker said this year’s cleanup day will focus primarily on cleaning up the reservoir’s northern shorelines. He said the need for groups and individuals to volunteer remains great. “Thanks to our volunteers, the reservoir is a much safer and cleaner place,” Welker said.
Volunteers have donated more than 5,000 hours and have removed more than 166 cubic yards of trash over the years. They have pulled out television sets; microwave ovens; lawn chairs; refrigerators; 55-gallon drums, more than 350 tires and have filled many bags of recyclable metal, glass, plastic and aluminum.
